1956 was a busy year for Chevrolet, as the company was working on multiple fronts to prepare its Ford offensive.
The GM brand was trying to further polish the Bel Air and pave the way for a big overhaul of its full-size lineup with concepts due later in the same decade. Chevrolet took the wraps off an Impala prototype at GM's motor show, planning to push the new nameplate to mass production in approximately two years.

The Bel Air was the company's superstar, getting styling improvements with a full-width grille but sticking with the same engine lineup. The top choice remained the 265 V8, with Chevrolet giving the finishing touches to the 283 (which eventually debuted on the 1957 Bel Air).

The model in these photos is a rough 1956 Bel Air that has likely been sitting for a long time. eBay seller bama_vintage has a long description of nearly every inch still alive on this Bel Air, though the bottom line is that everyone should get a tetanus shot before inspecting the car.

The Bel Air has turned into a massive pile of rusty metal, but the owner says their car is "very salvable." The good news is that you're still getting the VIN taiga and the door plate, which could serve as a good starting point to bring this car back to the road.

The Bel Air rolled off the assembly lines with a V8 under the hood, but the powertrain is now missing. You can install any engine you want, though the best option is to stick with the original 265 – you can also go for a more powerful unit, especially if you want to turn this Bel Air into a hot rod.

However, there's no doubt you'll spend a lot of time getting this Bel Air back on its wheels. The hood and the hinges are still decent, two complete doors with glass are also available, and plenty of extra parts go with the car to help with the restoration.

Despite all the good news, this Bel Air is not an easy project. It's not yet a complete rust bucket, but it's not very far either. You'll need a trailer to take this Bel Air home, but you should be able to get it ready for transportation quite fast, as it still rolls and steers easily.

The selling price is not a surprise, as you can get this Bel Air for iPhone money. The seller wants only $1,500 for the car, as the Bel Air landed on eBay with a no-reserve auction. Nobody entered the race to take it home, which is not surprising considering its shape, so it'll be interesting to see if the car receives a second chance in the remaining five days.
