All those who have dreamt of being welcomed by a Mercedes-Benz once they step off the airplane can make their dream come true by flying over to the Austrian Capital's main airport.
They might not be exactly the type of Mercedes-Benzes you were hoping for, but if they have a three-point star on the grille, they count.

Mercedes-Benz has just delivered the first Euro VI-compliant Mercedes-Benz Econic NGT (Natural Gas Technology) that will serve as a catering truck equipped with a lifting mechanism specifically designed for the Airbus 380 behemoth. However, the low cabin of the Econic NGT enables a very low delivery height from catering vehicle to plane, allowing it to serve a whole range of other - smaller - aircraft.

The novelty here, however, resides in the fuel used by the Econic NGT. Compared to a diesel engine (and what don't we compare to diesels these days?), the CO2 emissions of the gas powered truck are 20 percent lower. There's also the option of using biogas, a situation when the Econic actually becomes CO2 neutral.

Apart from the eco-friendly Econic NGT catering truck, Mercedes-Benz has also provided the Vienna International Airport with five Unimog U530 trucks. These versatile machines will mostly be used during the winter, but are also in charge with cleaning and maintenance.

One of the five U530s - the most powerful version of the Unimog range with its 299 hp engine - is fitted with a road sweeper and also has a permanently attached powerful magnet that removes metal scrap from the runways.

The other four utility trucks have snow blower-cutters driven by the Unimog’s front power take-off. They will be used to break through the snow walls created after clearing the runways and load the snow into trucks to be disposed of outside the airport's premises.

So, there you have it. Next time you'll find yourself at the Vienna International Airport, take some time away from plane spotting and give Econic NGT and Unimog spotting a chance as well.
