You may not have heard of the Kingdom of Bhutan, a small landlocked country bordered by India to the South and China to the North, famous for the adoption of ‘Gross National Happiness’ as a development goal (do you see this in ‘Western’ states? No).
Well, in addition to national happiness, an extremely admirable goal for an entire country to pursue, the Bhutanese government has introduced ‘Pedestrians’ Day’, a weekly event which will take place every Tuesday. It basically bans motorists from the nation’s town centers and forces them to walk to their destination.

The idea behind their philosophy is increasing the mental well-being of citizens along with their wealth, with a hint of environmental consciousness thrown into the mix. With traffic in the capital city of Thimphu (79,000 inhabitants) steadily increasing, the measure was introduced in order to prevent traffic-related problems faced by other, larger cities of the world.
