The Stig's Identity Revealed... NOT

The automotive world has always had its fair share of mysteries ever since the first car started rolling. Over the last seven years, one of this mysteries has been the identity of the Stig, the Top Gear racing driver.

Here’s how Jeremy Clarkson describes IT: “"We don't know its name, we really don't know its name, nobody knows its name, and we don't wanna know, 'cause it's a racing driver"

Actually the first Stig (the Black one) had a relatively short life, as he was killed on 26 October 2003 (he debuted on 20 October 2002), as his identity (Perry McCarthy) was revealed. Of course, the BBC never admitted this. The White Stig was introduced subsequently, with his identity remaining secret.

The expected Stig is Ben Collins, but the white racing suit is said to have occasionally been put on by others, such as the show’s producer Andy Willman and F1 racing driver Heikki Kovalainen.

However, a Top Gear fan was close to discovering who The Stig really is... or so he thought. According to various reports coming form the British media, Martin Perzylo was driving on the UK’s M55, when he passed by a group of vehicles wearing the Top Gear logo, with one of the cars driven by something that looked like The Stig. The man followed the convoy of cars until they stopped in a service station. The “Stig” even accepted to take a photo with Perzylo, after which he began some sort of helmet strip-tease that was interrupted by his bodyguard.

This all seemed fine until the BBC issued a statement saying that the person inside the suit was an impostor and that the company will debut an investigation to find out his or her identity.

We don’t think we could be blamed for having our doubts about the BBC’s release. Maybe The Stig just wanted a bit of public attention and now the BBC is trying to make the most out of the opportunity, bringing a new aura of mystery to the character’s story...
