MPVs may be dead in most parts of the world, but definitely not in China. Xpeng has just introduced the X9. It is actually a super-van with up to seven seats and up to almost 500 horsepower.
The Xpeng X9 comes as the seventh model of the brand, yet the first of the X series. Xpeng is currently selling two series in China: the G (used for crossovers and SUVs) and the P (used for sedans).

That is the output that the range-topping variant is credited with. The multi-purpose vehicle will come with a dual-motor setup for a total system output of 496 horsepower. It weighs over 7,000 pounds and can sit up to seven people across three rows.

It measures 208 inches (5,293 millimeters) in length, 78 inches (1,988 millimeters) in width, and is 70 inches (1,785 millimeters) tall, sporting a wheelbase of 124.4 inches (3,160 millimeters). These figures make it the largest vehicle in the Xpeng lineup right now.

As usual with the models sold in China, all this information is available before the official unveiling of the vehicle on the country's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) after Xpeng filed the documents for market authorization.

The photos uploaded on the MIIT website show an MPV painted in silver, with an angular front fascia and very short hood, aerodynamically optimized wheels, and flush door handles, while the rear sports straight lines and a straight rear window.

Customers will be able to choose one of the two powertrains available. The entry-level one will be powered by a single electric motor developing 315 horsepower (320 PS) for a top speed of 124 mph (200 kph).

The base version sports a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack, but the capacity of the unit and how far it allows the car to drive before it needs to be plugged in again is still under wraps. What we do know, though, is that the MPV weighs 6,889 pounds (3,125 kilograms).

The range-topping variant will get the 315-horsepower (320-PS) motor from the entry-level version and integrated in a setup together with a 181-horsepower (184 PS) unit for a combined output of 496 horsepower (503 PS). This version will come with the more expensive nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) battery pack.

The Xpeng X9 will slot in a segment where Zeekr and Denza were hoping to make the rules with their 009 and D9, respectively. The carmaker wants to place the X9 in the luxury MPV segment. At the opposite end of its portfolio, Xpeng is placing an EV, which will come under the newly found brand Mona and will cost approximately 150,000 yuan (around $20,000).

The X9 MPV will enter production this fall, the local media reports, and is set to go on sale late this year. Pricing will be announced around the market launch date.
