Porsche can be easily named the most successful automaker in motorsport, taking part and winning races in many branches. It started growing in the world of four-wheeled competitions during the 1960s, winning the Targa Forio, the Monte Carlo Rally, the 1962 French Grand Prix, and, of course, numerous Le Mans seasons in the following years.
But few people ever had time to think about the massive effort done in the backstage to sustain all the show, such as the researching and engineering, testing, pilot training and logistics. Speaking of which, let’s take a look at the truck that literally drove Porsche’s models safely towards success.
The last one to make it
Actually, we should have said trucks, but since this customized 1968 Mercedes-Benz truck here is the last one surviving, we’ll just focus on it alone. Yep, Porsche’s racing legends were hauled by two Mercedes transporters back in the day to fight against their own kind.
Brumos Porsche in Jacksonville are the proud owners of the single surviving Porsche Mercedes hauler. Its nickname is “Buster” and has been originally converted from a passenger bus to transport Stuttgart company’s racecars to different racetracks and change history.
From the 917s in the sixties and seventies, to 911 RSRs and 956s in the eighties, all had at least a go in the back of one of these two iconic haulers. But more on that can be seen in this well put together mini documentary bellow.
