The Hamann Volcano Takes a Bite Out of the SLR

When you guys first laid eyes on the Mercedes SLR, most of you must have thought that it was the pinnacle of motoring engineering and absolute design perfection. Any other alteration done to the car is just bad taste, there's no way to make it better.

Well, don't tell that to the guys at Hamann, who have just released their own interpretation of the SLR, aptly named the Volcano. Since tuning supercars is all a matter of taste, opinions of Hamann's latest project are very divided, while some think it's the absolute bomb, other think it's over-the-top and kitschy.

The only way to really judge is to take a look for yourself, but we're sure you'll like it. Only purists will squint their eyes at the carbon fiber panels lavishly splattered around the car. The rest of us mortals will probably drool.

But before we get into that, let's see what's under the hood. The horsepower and torque were increased from 626 hp and 575 lb to 700 hp and 612 lb respectively. This was done by replacing the pulley system, customizing the exhaust manifolds and upgrading the ECU. To prevent overheating, the Hamann tuners added a new waterpump.

Tweaking the transmission's control unit, they've managed to improve the acceleration time, the car now doing 0 to 60 in 3.6 seconds and the top speed is 9 mph higher than that of the standard edition SLR.

Now that we've seen what this SLR can do, let's take a closer look at the visual aspect. The first thing anyone notices is the vastness of the carbon fibre, that seem to be the defining material of the Volcano. The front and rear wings are now carbon-made, and so are the skirts. For better handling at top speeds, the hood, and the rear diffuser partner with the rear spoiler to improve aerodynamics.

The wheels are special edition rims, 21-inch Edition Race, 255/30 for the front and 345/25 for the rear. For those picky customers Hamann is also offering a series of interior trim features that make the car stand out even more. Just take a look at the Alcantra leather interiors, the aluminum pedals, carbon fibre trim for the dash and the center console.

While the pictures don't do it justice, we've added a generous amount for you to drool over.
