The stock BMW iX can drive as far as 391 miles before it needs to be plugged in again. But the Gemini dual-chemistry battery can almost double that figure. And the Gemini battery produced by ONE is to blame for coming up with the solution.
Our Next Energy (ONE) equipped the mid-size crossover with the Gemini dual-chemistry battery and ran it through the Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicle Test Procedure (TLTP), which is the European standard for determining the range of electric cars. The result achieved in the text carried out in Los Angeles, California, was nothing short of impressive. The ONE team celebrated each mile added.

Therefore, the Gemini dual-chemistry battery made the BMW iX drive as far as 608.1 miles (978.6 kilometers). The unit can provide 450 Wh/L of energy density at a system level and 185+ kWh of energy in the space typically allocated to passenger EV packs.

The technology can reduce the use of lithium by up to 20% and of graphite by 60%, as well as minimize the use of nickel and cobalt.

By coming up with the technology, ONE plans to make people comfortable having an EV of their own and get rid of the range anxiety. Mujeeb Ijaz, CEO and founder of ONE, points out that the Gemini battery can double the range of EVs.

The dual-chemistry architecture two integrates two different cell types that make use of different battery chemistries. The lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells power the electric motor, providing a range of 150 miles.

But for the longer trips, the high energy density anode-free cells bring an additional 450 miles of range by transferring power through ONE’s high efficiency DC-to-DC converter. The two cells, connected to the DC-to-DC converter, bring a combined range of over 600 miles before the car needs to be plugged in again.

The figures make the Gemini the longest-range EV battery pack that fits in the 300 to 400 liters of space typically available in a vehicle for the installation of the battery.

Last year, ONE signed a deal with BMW Group to integrate the Gemini battery technology into the BMW iX. BMW I Ventures, the Silicon Valley-based venture capital arm of BMW, is also an investor in ONE.

The technology has reached its final development stages. The company will continue to further develop the technology and get it ready for a full production program, with the BMW iX being the first to receive the Gemini battery pack. The iX has been in production since 2021, but the maximum range it can get from the 105 kWh large battery pack is 391 miles (630 kilometers).

Until the Gemini battery hits series production, an improved range is not out of the question either.
