After its debut as a concept car in 2012 at the Auto China Show in Beijing, the Denza project is finally rolling into dealerships as the country’s first luxury electric passenger car. Sort of like their own Tesla Model S...
Still, the car has nothing to do with the American counterpart as it has been developed in a partnership between Daimler and BYD, with the production model being revealed at this year’s Beijing Auto Show.
It might remind you of the upcoming Tesla Model X, but in fact, the Denza is built on the same platform as the Merced-Benz B-Class (W245), whose double floor design allowed for plenty of space to accommodate a 47.5 kWh battery pack.
The electric motor offers a peak 86 kW and 290 Nm of torque and will keep propelling the car for about 250 km on a full charge. Definitely a car suited for medium urban families.
The serene simple shaped interior offers enough space for 5 adults and 475 liters of luggage in the boot. Standard features include keyless entry, parking assist, tyre pressure monitoring, 6 airbags, leather upholstery with contrast stitching, electric adjustable front seats, air conditioning, and a Harman Kardon sound system wired to a decent 8-inch infotainment system with Bluetooth connectivity, USB, AUX, navigation and apps.
Dealerships are already offering the Denza starting at RMB369,000 ($60,140/€48,420) and you’ll see all these feature in the car’s first promotional clip bellow.
