Not even four years since the first ever Sino-German joint venture dedicated to the development of an all-electric Chinese car was signed, the Denza was officially launched as a production model at the 2014 Beijing Auto Show.
In essence, the compact car is the culmination of cooperative efforts that have been spread as 50:50 between Daimler AG and BYD, with the Chinese supplying the lithium iron phosphate battery, while the Germans designed the actual car.
“Daimler is constantly moving forward with emission-free mobility; and with our DENZA we are also on the right track in China, which is destined to become the world’s most important market for electric vehicles“, said Hubertus Troska, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG with responsibility for China, and Chairman and CEO of Daimler Greater China.
“With DENZA we deliver the safest, most reliable, and most convenient electric vehicle to our Chinese customers – designed, engineered, and produced in China, for China, once again proving our full commitment to the country.” Troska continued.
Even though it is not exactly obvious just by looking at it, the Denza is actually based on the previous generation of the Mercedes-Benz B-Class (W245) whose double floor design allows plenty of space for the 47.5 kWh battery.
Speaking of which, the Denza apparently has a driving range of about 300 km (186 miles) in normal driving conditions, while the 117 hp and 290 Nm (214 lb ft) of torque electric motor gives it an electronically-limited top speed of 150 km/h (93 mph).
The new model is set to hit the showrooms in September and will start at RMB 369000 (around EUR 43400 or $59913), but thanks to central and local subsidies totaling up to almost RMB 120000 (about EUR 14100 or $19463) it is that much cheaper for the end client.
