The AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7 speed sports transmission won an award in the wildly contested Automotive category held by Popular Science magazine. This contest is held every year, and the winners are usually announced in the December issue, which has the largest circulation.

This gearbox uses a wet start off clutch, which is different from your normal automatic transmission because it doesn't have a torque converter. There are four different modes (like Ferrari's f430 manetino). The first is “C” (stands for comfort) and the changes are smooth and slow. The second is “S” (sport mode). This changes 20% faster than C mode. “S+” changes 20% faster than S. The ultimate setting is “M” (manual). The difference between “C” and “M” is 50%. In “M” mode the changes take 100 milliseconds.

This gearbox also have a launch control option which allows you to set off as fast as possible, without having to worry about anything. It is called Race Start and it ensures that your SL63 AMG accelerates to it's maximum potential while providing the best possible traction for the drive wheels.   This program makes the SL change gears in the shortest possible time.

The AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT7-speed is mounted to the 6.3litre V8 developing 525HP and 630Nm (making it the most powerful roadster with a normal aspirated engine in it's class). The SL shoots to 100 in 4.6 seconds and has an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h. The big V8 ensures that you have high low end torque and a relatively high 7200rpm redline.

Mercedes borrowed some of it's F1 technology using lightweight, particularly rigid closed-deck crankcase and cylinder walls with revolutionary LDS coating, as well as valve gear designed for high engine speeds with bucket-type tappets in the cylinder heads.

The SL has a 3 stage ESP – function that offers 3 different control settings: ESP ON,ESP SPORT, ESP OFF, so you can make big slides without anything interfering. At least that's what they say...

Popular Science editors say this new gearbox represents “important and revolutionary technological process”. This magazine's average readership is about 6.8 million each month(about the size of a small country). That many people can't be wrong. But then again they haven't all tested it...
