The 2011 Mt. Washington Climb to the Clouds Race Is Back

The Mt. Washington Climb to the Clouds is back in action with another round for 2011. The legendary hillclimb was cancelled for 10 years, but now one of the best drivers are preparing to give a warm welcome for the return of the Mt. Washington Climb to the Clouds event.

Between June 22 and June 26 multi-time rally champion Tim O'Neil, seven-time SCCA ProRally Champion Paul Choiniere, current Climb to the Clouds official-record holder and six-time Canadian Rally Champion Frank Sprongl are going to race to the clouds in this year’s event.

The race features a list of 75 competitors that will race upwards the 7.6-mile (12.2 km) Mt. Washington Auto Road. One name is missing from the entry list and that’s Travis Pastrana who is currently focusing on NASCAR.

Other drivers that will participate are Jimmy Keeney and Todd Cook who will race purpose built open-wheel hillclimb cars with engines outputs of 900 horsepower, but only with two-wheel drive.

Keeney is no stranger to hillclimb races as he is the 2nd fastest qualifier at the 2010 Pikes Peak International Hillclimb while Cook is a multi-time class winner at Pikes Peak.

There are some stars between cars too like the open-wheeled 1968 McKee MK8, the Formula 5000-based car raced by Robert D'Amore and "The Patriot", a bespoke hillclimb car raced by Jerry Driscoll.

Several classes will feature a various amount of vehicles from the 1930's and 1950's automobiles like the 1933 Alfa Romeo 8C 2300, the 1934 Reuter Special or the 1951 Jaguar XK120 of the Vintage Class to the purpose-built Freightliner 14.7 liter turbo-diesel-powered race-truck which will take part in a truck race. This particular race is a premiere in the history of the Mt. Washington Climb to the Clouds race.

There will be two rally classes such as the two-wheel drive and all-wheel drive Rally classes which will feature drivers like Antoine L'Estage (Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X) who is the defending Rally America, North American and Canadian Rally Champion and Former Subaru factory rally driver Ramana Lagemann. Both will participate in the two-wheel drive Rally class.
