It's at times difficult to perfectly understand just how expensive custom motorcycles get to be, and that's why we often use the price of brand-new cars to get a baseline. After all, it's one thing to learn a bike is worth this many thousands of dollars, and another to know you could buy a Tesla Model 3 Performance for about the same price.
The American EV maker is selling the top-of-the-range Model 3 for $42,740 at the time of writing, and that's just a couple of thousand bucks over the cost of the customized Harley-Davidson Breakout sitting before you now. At $40,000 (base bike + custom bits), it also more expensive than both the other Model 3s available, the Long Range and the entry-level.
The comparison is not fair in many ways, but I think it's more than enough to show just how much passion and money some people are willing to spend on having their two-wheelers transformed into something no one else on the planet has.
The bike was made at the request of a customer by French custom garage Melk. It was put together starting from a 2015 Breakout, the Softail model that sported the 103 engine in the frame.
The ride underwent the usual changes, being at the receiving end of new turbine-style wheels and fresh Avon tires, new fenders for both of them, new covers in the places they were needed, and the perfect paint job that blends Vivid Black and Xenon Gray Satin.
All of that is topped off by one of the most intriguing calligraphy choices we've seen in a long time, spelling the Harley-Davidson name on the fuel tank in a beautiful way.
Unlike most of the custom bikes we get to see, the modified Breakout also had its engine tampered with. Although still retaining most of the original elements, it got pumped by means of an S&S Stage II kit and new mapping. As extra pieces of hardware, it received a Performance Machine air filter and an exhaust sourced from Bassani.
Lowered by means of a Melk kit, the Breakout look like an entirely different ride than the one that rolled off the Harley-Davidson lines about eight years ago.
The bike was completed in 2022, meaning it's still fresh in this world, and it's probably no longer available for purchase. Melk can have stuff like this made anytime, though, and these guys are most of the time just one click away.
Noteworthy is the fact that if you do own the Breakout or other Harley you need transforming, you'll not have to pay the price of a Model 3 for the bike. Only the upgrades that need to be made are much cheaper, coming in at a lot more manageable $19,000.
