While established motorcycle manufacturers have been slow to dive into the electric-powered realm, we've lost count of how many startups from all parts of the world have popped up looking to steal a piece of the pie in the electric motorcycle market. And it's these smaller companies that are shaping the next generation of more eco-friendly powered motorcycles.
One of the new brands primed to become a success story is Tarform Motorcycles. This Brooklyn-based company, founded by Taras Kravtchouk and Jean Christian Jung in 2016, aims to create motorcycles that appeal to young folks with a focus on zero-emission premium models that use sustainable materials and advanced technologies.
After their first e-bike, an electric cafe racer called Luna, enjoyed tremendous success and has been hailed as "The Motorcycle of Tomorrow," the company is now introducing Vera, a new and revolutionary electric motorcycle that represents a futuristic spin on a classic design, highlighting the team's commitment to accessible, high-performance EV mobility.
Designed for performance and sustainability, the Vera is engineered as a versatile street and scrambler motorcycle that can be used for both city commutes and off-road adventures. In terms of performance, its air-cooled electric motor, capable of 55 kW (74 hp) and 116 ft-lb (157 Nm) of torque, allows the motorcycle to reach a top speed of 85 mph (137 kph) and accelerate from 0 to 60 mph (97 kph) in just 3.5 seconds.
A 102 V, 8 kWh Lithium battery pack feeds the motor and ensures a 100-mile (160-km) range when riding in the city. It will recharge in just 2 hours, but the e-motorcycle also benefits from regenerative braking hardware. Besides the impressive specs, the Vera also comes with state-of-the-art components, including Ohlins suspension and Brembo brakes.
Aesthetically, the new Tarform motorcycle boasts a sleek body built around a lightweight aluminum frame, an inverted fork up front, a round headlight, spoked 17-inch aluminum wheels, and off-road tires. The aluminum frame supports a modular drivetrain, which ensures durability and flexibility for future upgrades to the motor and battery pack.
The design prioritizes sustainability, with a top body panel made from plant-based composites and seat upholstery made from a bio-based alternative to vinyl, highlighting the company's commitment to reducing the use of toxic materials and waste.
Moreover, the new e-motorcycle maintains a lightweight profile at just 360 pounds, making it accessible to new riders. With such a low curb weight, a convenient 31" seat height, and a direct-drive system (no gearbox required), the Vera promises a seamless riding experience.
The bike also integrates advanced tech, including a 3.4″ Retina display with Bluetooth and 4G connectivity for health monitoring, over-the-air updates, and access to statistics through the Tarform mobile app.
With the introduction of Vera, Tarform is not only expanding its EV mobility solution portfolio but also transitioning from a boutique shop to a large-scale manufacturer.
"We’re thrilled to introduce The Vera, an electric motorcycle aimed at higher production volumes, aligning with our strategic vision to grow into a leader in the premium EV mobility space," says Taras Kravtchouk. "Our experience delivering vehicles across the US and Canada has enriched our transition from bespoke manufacturing to a scalable production method while maintaining our design ethos, allowing the Tarform brand and our vehicles to reach a wider audience."
Designed for both city riders and weekend trail enthusiasts, Tarform's Vera electric motorcycle offers a balanced blend of style, power, and eco-friendly design. In terms of pricing, the electric two-wheeler starts at $16,000, making it way more affordable than the Luna, which retailed at $24,000. Deliveries are estimated to begin in 2025.
