The world of emission-free air mobility is taking shape in front of our eyes. New aircraft designs, new infrastructure concepts, and a new legal framework are all part of this trailblazing process. Crisalion and Kookiejar are some of the youngest names working to accelerate it and offer sustainable flight alternatives to the public.
One of the most recent collaborations in the global AAM (Advanced Air Mobility) industry is bringing together a Spanish aircraft maker and a Swedish infrastructure company. The goal is to speed up vertiport development and integrate the Crisalion electric and unmanned aircraft named Integrity (electric vertical takeoff and landing) into upcoming operations.

Kookiejar is introducing a modular, scalable vertiport concept inspired by the famous IKEA. It's supposed to use as little space as possible and maximize efficiency, which will help expand air taxi operations easier. It's a democratization of vertiport operations, if you like, meaning greater access for a wider range of operators. Modularity and affordability will be two of the main characteristics of the Kookiejar vertiports, which will also support the expansion of AAM networks.

The Integrity eVTOL combines a comfortable five-seat cabin with short-range capabilities and advanced flight controls. The FlyFree technology developed by the Tecnalia research group is an advanced rotor control software that promises to make the Integrity aircraft easier to maneuver and safer. Like most eVTOLs, Integrity is designed to be suitable for a wide range of operations, from passenger commutes to medical emergency transportation and cargo deliveries. While promising a decent cruising speed of up to 180 kph (112 mph), it will mostly cover short-distance routes of no more than 100 km (62 miles).

Crisalion Mobility is one of the AAM trailblazers in Spain. Initially launched as Umiles Next, the Spanish startup accomplished a great deal in just a couple of years. Over the past two years, it has conducted eVTOL demonstrations where its flagship aircraft flew together with several other unmanned electric aircraft, each flying at a different level.

Crisalion is also one of the few in this industry to offer a wider mobility ecosystem concept that's not limited to aircraft. The company has developed a fleet management tool specifically created for autonomous electric vehicles operating on the ground. Just as with the Integrity eVTOL, one of the main focuses was enabling coordinated autonomous transportation.

Earlier this year, CDTI Innovacion (Center for Technology Development and Innovation), a public organization linked to the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation, and Universities, chose Crisalion to be part of its Innvierte program. The startup was awarded €5.4 million ($6 million).

The Spanish startup also joined forces with another infrastructure company, Bluenest by Globalvia, for an AAM project that will expand beyond European borders and reach Latin America as well.
