We’ve always found dyno benchmarking fascinating. It’s only that you get to see the power the wheels of your car are actually putting to the ground but you also get to see just how honest car makers are, in the end.
While most manufacturers boast their numbers to impress the audience, others understate them for the same reason. Think of it this way: ‘That skinny dude just lifted 500 lbs!’. You’d be surprised, right? It’s the same principle here.

In recent years, Mercedes-Benz was champion at this chapter, some of its cars making close to 700 HP even though the stated numbers were in the mid 500s. It’s the same with BMWs, only that they tend to be a bit more honest.

And while the reported HP numbers of some car makers represent the power the engine makes at the crank, in some cases, the dyno readings showed that the horsepower figures at the wheels were really close.

That being said, usually a car’s dyno readings (or WHP as tech junkies say) are lower than the crank readings, because of the transmission loses that occur on the way.

Now, this crazy BMW that we’re showing you here has no less than 632 WHP and 440 lb-ft (600 Nm) of torque at its disposal. Of course all that didn’t come from the assembly lines of BMW. Oh, no... This came from the 4-liter V8 with an Active Autowerke Gen 2 Stage 3 supercharger, new cross pipes and new exhaust system.

The result is absolutely stunning when you think about the power the S65 engine must be making at the crank now. Add in a rough 15% of transmission loss and you get around 730 HP. That is absolutely staggering! Good luck trying to keep that kind of power in check!
