Subaru Stella Launched in Japan

The second generation Subaru Stella electric vehicle is ready and it has been launched on the Japanese market today The vehicle, equipped with a high-performance lithium-ion battery, will begin deliveries in late July, with only 170 units planned to find their owners by the end of March 2010.

The plug-in EV was developed based on the Subaru Stella mini car and it combines the EV system with the compact and light body. The EV achieves a 90 km range on a single charge, according to Fuji Heavy Industries (FHI) own data.

Stella can be re-charged up to 80 percent of its capacity in 15 minutes using the quick charging system, whereas it’s also fully rechargeable in 8 hours with AC100V household power outlet or 5 hours with AC200V.

The maximum power Stella's electric motor is 47 kW (63 hp) but, despite the low output, it generates maximum torque (170 Nm) from the start. Green technologies embodied in the EV include braking energy recovering systems, which also contributes to the vehicle's range.

The car provides zero CO2 emissions during driving and also reduces CO2 levels produced in the process of electric generation, compared to the petrol engine vehicle’s emissions level.

The manufacturer’s suggested retail price for the Subaru plug-in Stella is 4,725,000 yen ($49,150) including consumption tax. It is a steep price, but an extra 1,380,000 yen subsidy ($14,350) can be obtained thanks to the Next Generation Vehicle Promotion Center. Additional tax reduction is to be expected.

As for after sale services, they willl be provided through some Subaru dealerships yet to be designated by FHI.
