Subaru's Version of the Toyota FT-86 to Be More Hardcore

The Toyota FT-86 is one of the most anticipated sport vehicles of the current era. However, it seems that the true performance crown will be worn by its sister model developed by Subaru.

Subaru’s incarnation of the FT-86 will come with a 60hp premium over Toyota’s offer, as autocar reports.

The two Japanese companies are currently working together to develop the vehicle. Toyota’s version of the car is expected to use a modified incarnation of Subaru’s 2.0 liter flat four, which has been tweaked to deliver 200 hp. Subaru is planing to offer a different feel, as the company wants to use the Impreza STI’s 2.5 liter turbocharged unit that will deliver 260 hp.

Both vehicles will use the same gearbox, with the transmission of choice being a version of Subaru’s six-speed manual. In addition to that, both will deliver the power to the rear wheels. Subaru has reportedly chosen not to include the FT-86 in its four-wheel-drive saga, as the AWD system would add weight and increase the complexity of the vehicle. This would have moved the vehicle upmarket and potentially destroyed its budget performance car image.

The Subaru version of the FT-86 won’t just use steroids under the hood. The vehicle is also expected to come with more aggressive styling that will clearly differentiate it from its sister.

The whole “nonidentical twins” strategy will also ensure that the two cars won’t cannibalize each other.

The Subaru sports car is expected to retail for a price of between EUR30,000 ($39,000) and EUR36,000 ($47,000).
