Last month, we reported that a team of 20 students from the Cologne University of Applied Science are preparing a Ford Focus RS, supplied by the automaker, in order to enter it in this year’s 24-hour Nurburgring race.
The team, assisted by TRW, Dekra, Dunlop and Castrol, now announced that the driver line-up for the race will include the two-time WRC rally winner Jari-Matti Latvala and three other circuit drivers: Stefan Schlesack, Daniela Schmid, and Anja Wassertheurer.
Latvala, an usual presence in Ford Focus WRC cars since 2006, considers that the Nurburgring endurance race is an important event in his career.
"Obviously my expectations were very high. The Nordschleife has a fearsome reputation and having now driven all of these curves, I can understand the reasons behind that. It demands the utmost respect, but I found the experience to be thrilling. The race isn't going to be relaxing, but they say that a change is as good as a rest. We will soon see what kind of a rest this will be. I am really looking forward to this race," said the racing driver.
Latvala and the three aforementioned drivers recently tested the car, competing in Saturday’s second round of the VLN Endurance Championship at the Nurburgring. The crew finished third in its class.
"I was extremely impressed with the car. I'm used to the four-wheel drive of my Ford Focus RS World Rally Car, but I was genuinely surprised by the good traction available from this front-wheel drive touring car," Latvala said after the test race.
