If you are in the mood to see a couple of old men – or late middle-aged, if you like – go at it in the latest Youtube hit, then you should definitely check out the Gotta Get Back My Baby music video.
Having amassed over 2.6 million views in just a couple of days, the clip features a strange duo comprising Sting and Shaggy doing a bit of investigative work in what is meant to be Miami Vice style, while singing their sadness about losing their baby for this or that reason.
The music video would have been just a song lost among million others hadn’t it been for perhaps the weirdest product placement we’ve seen in a while.
As they cruise the streets of Miami, looking for a chick who beats the hell out of some guys in a club, the not-so-dynamic duo does so in an Abarth 124 Spider. A cool looking car, but a two-seater that offers no room for any other baby lost in the town.
The strange product placement part comes about halfway through the clip, when the two drop the singing and start talking about the car.
“Hey, you know, I can’t wait to get my hands on one of these, man!," says Shaggy, despite already having his hands on one of these, as he is sitting behind the wheel of the thing.
“Yeah, ten more years on the force, you might be able to afford one,” answers Sting, either overestimating the price of the Abarth 124 Spider (which sells from $24,995 in the U.S.) or underestimating the salary of a Miami police officer (around $68,000 per year for according to Indeed).
Either way, this commercial intermezzo comes out as a cheap stunt in the video directed by Michael Garcia. Check it out for yourselves in the video below.
