Spyshots: Next-Gen Volkswagen Touareg

The next-generation Volkswagen Touareg is currently undergoing heavy testing somewhere in the United States and will go on sale next year in most markets. There are no official details regarding the upcoming Touareg but, if we are to trust the rumors currently available in various media around the world, the car will be lighter by around 300 kilos, as the parent company will attempt to make it more fuel efficient and, at the same time, improve the engine performance.

The chassis has been lengthened by a few centimeters, which means the Touareg will boast a roomier interior - a third row of seats will most likely be offered as an option.

In terms of exterior appearance, Volkswagen will make the Touareg a bit sportier, with the most significant changes to be spotted in the front fascia, grille, headlights, rear fascia and taillights. Inside, the Touareg will be updated as well but it's still unclear which parts are actually going to be enhanced.

Just like the current version, the Touareg will share its chassis with the next-generation Audi Q7 and Porsche Cayenne, also projected to go on sale next year.

The engines will be, as we said, optimized for reduced fuel consumption and lower emissions. A 3.6-liter V6 unit and a 4.2-liter V8 petrol configuration will be available, with a hybrid version most likely to be offered as well. Early rumors are hinting that the Hybrid Touareg will be fitted with a 3.0-liter supercharged V6 configuration, plus an electric motor that will be mounted between the transmission box and the engine.

The new Touareg is also expected to be cheaper than the current model. Production is believed to start in the second half of 2010.
