Things that are sporty and fun are almost never safe. Nobody buys a pet cheetah expecting it to be as docile as a kitten. However, Volkswagen has always tried to go against the grain of thought with uber-powerful but also very safe Golf R models.
After two generation of VR6 powered monsters, the Germans decided they could get the same power from a lighter four-cylinder turbo engine. Thus, the MkVI generation R20 was born. Next year, a replacement will arrive in the form of this beast.
It's still going to have a 2.0 TSI engine, but will come much closer to the performance of the Audi S3, producing at least 290 hp if not the full 300 hp. The Golf R prototype spotted testing at the Nurburgring reveals much about VW's plans.
For instance, the exhaust system has evolved from the traditional R design to a quad-pipe layout. This not only allows for better engine breathing, but also ensures the hot Golf looks the part.
Once again, the Golf R will come with all-wheel drive, but VW has tried to make the system lighter by about 40 kilos, which is no bad thing. The car will make use of an electronically controlled torque vectoring system.
Expect to see the Golf R in production form at this September's Frankfurt Motor Show before it goes on sale across the world early next year.
