Inspired by the Vision EfficientDynamics concept (unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2009), the i8 Prototype seems to be getting closer to the final version.
According to BMW insider information, the i8 will be using a turbocharged 1.5-liter 3-cylinder engine (producing 220 HP) accompanied by 2 electric motors producing 128 HP and a total of 550 Nm of torque. With this configuration the car accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds with a mere 2.7 l/100 km fuel efficiency.

Those numbers are impressive and BMW's new car has some other trick in its sleeve. It will feature the plug-in hybrid technology, allowing the car a 35 km autonomy on electricity alone. Also, the super light chassis and other weight reducing materials used in the final version of the car will make this one of the lightest BMWs yet.

As far as exterior design goes, the i8 will resemble the Vision EfficientDynamics concept with a few alterations. It will have butterfly doors (which is a first for BMW) and at the back the tail-lights will have a repositioned third brake light with a different diffuser.

The launch of this new model is scheduled for 2014, probably towards the end of the year and the price tag will be set around €170,000 or $250,000.
