Spyshots: Audi S6 Avant

The brand-new estate version of the A6 - the 2012 A6 Avant - just got its big day of veil pulling on May 18th, and it looks like the German carmaker wants to give us a new reason for jumping out of a big gas-guzzling SUV and into something better looking: the S6 Avant.

A test mule was recently spotted on the Nurburgring track, shrouded by a vail of camouflage. The S6 Avant is distinguished by sportier fascias, aerodynamic side skirts, and a four-tailpipe exhaust system. It should also receive a revised grille and faux aluminium mirror casings, as is the case with all of the Ingolstadt carmaker’s sporty versions.

So what else is new here? Well, the S6 will be just one of one of several Audis (and even a couple of Bentleys) that will make use of a new 4.0-liter TFSI twin-turbocharged engine. Rumors have suggested that the unit will produce 415 hp in the Bentley Continental GT, but we don’t think this is good enough for the S6 Avant, or the saloon for that matter, as it’s less than the 435 hp developed by the outgoing model’s 5.2-liter V10.

Audi really has a talent that is unrivaled at designing four-wheel drive estates that are both practical, fast and very esthetically appealing, and their latest creation should be no exception to this rule.

The Avant has the same dashboard layout as the four-door version adding some bespoke options such as a load-through hatch, a fixing set and a power rear hatch. Despite being bigger than the previous generation, some 70 kilograms (154.32 lbs) have already been shaved off thanks to the new aluminum chassis, and the lighter V8 engine should make things even more interesting.
