Hyundai has just updated the ix35 SUV in 2013, with what the automakers say are things customers really wanted. However, the model is facing ever stiffer competition from new, lighter and more advanced rivals.
We have the very first images of the next generation model, likely to be added to the Hyundai model range in 2015, since the current model dates back to 2009. A prototype has been spotted undergoing testing in Sweden for the very first time.
Our spies tell us the design changes are not going to be radical, just keener and ore focused to give the ix35 a modern look. But the new SUV does appear to be lager and more practical, just like every Hyundai revealed the past couple of years.
The SUV's platform is likely to be derived from that of the new Hyundai i30, also shared with the Kia Soul. Engine options will include everything from a simple 1.6-liter to new turbo GDI units that Hyundai has been working on for years. Diesel options will likely be 1.7 and 2.0-liter carryovers with better fuel economy.
From a design point of view, the ix35 is showing us a rear door window that is slightly curved. The car is not actually as big as it would appear, since the black camo at the back includes giant blocks there to mask the hatch's proportions. The front end appears to have squatted headlights and a grille similar to the 2015 Genesis sedan. These are early time for the ix35, so stay tuned for more spyshots.
