Practicality, speed and luxury are characteristics that every Avant model needs to have. But in the compact segment, Audi has been fighting with one hand behind its back for several years, as the A4 was boring even when new. However, the all-new generation coming out early next year could be a game changer.
Our team of spy photographers have managed to catch up with a couple of test prototypes for the B9 generation A4 Avant. The process that will eventually lead to a full reveal has just started, as the camouflage covering the front and rear lighting systems has been lifted.

We're looking at two different prototypes. One has basic taillights and the other full-LED ones that look more premium. They might also employ dynamic graphics systems like the ones used on the A6.

Around the front, the design of the 2016 A4 Avant seems underwhelming to say the least. Especially when compared to the new Mercedes C-Class, Audi's car will continue to appear a bit dull.

But we're more interested in what's under the skin, since the MLB Evo platform is expected to create wonders in terms of weight savings. The all-new engines will also help the A4 conduct itself in a more efficient manner, and we're not just talking about some dirty diesels.

Last month, Audi unveiled a brand new 2.0 TFSI turbo engine, which it says consumes less than 5 l/100 (47 mpg US) and yet delivers 190 PS. This is like having your cake and eating it at the same time.

However, most of the engine versions will use a 2-liter TDI, with outputs ranging from 120 PS to over 200. The first-ever A4 e-tron will also be an oil-burner. Even the hot S4 Avant might be a TDI, as Audi's new e-turbo technology will allow the 3-liter V6 to deliver over 320 PS almost lag-free.

The return of the mighty RS4 Avant is also guaranteed, especially now that Mercedes got in on the action with its 510 PS C63 AMG S Estate. Rumor has it that work is close to being completed on a new twin-turbo V6 TFSI engine that delivers 500 horsepower and about 50% more torque than the old V8.
