The M4 is shaping up to be the best thing to come out of the German workshops in years. Our spy photographers have captured a test prototype of the car we've already seen at Pebble Beach while cruising the roads of Germany.
Despite some camo still being left on the car, we can pretty much make out this is the same basic shape as the concept. However, some of the more hardcore bits, like the carbon exhaust tips, have been left out.
The M6 is a bit too much of a car for road use. Go anywhere near the gas and you'll find yourself without a driver's license faster than you can say M Performance. That's why it's more at home being a GT, but the M4 is more compact, lighter and more dynamic.
Power will come from a 3-liter twin-turbo engine which will not only make the car faster than the old M3 but also a lot more economical, something premium car owners demand these days. The power unit will be linked to either a six-speed manual gearbox or a dual-clutch.
We expect both the M4 coupe and the M3 sedan will make their official debuts at next year's Detroit Auto Show.
