With its Italian cousin, the Lamborghini Huracan, driving off into the sunset in 2024, replaced by an all-new electrified supercar, the second-generation Audi R8 is being retired sooner. 2023 is the final model year for this exotic beast, which is being put to sleep for good.
But is it really going away without a major bang? It appears so, as it was already celebrated with an anticlimactic video on social media. Nonetheless, overseas reports speak of a possible return of the moniker, and as you probably guessed, it will be with an electric twist.

An electric successor to the Audi R8 is supposedly in development and might mix different platforms, like the PPE (Porsche Macan EV), MEB (various VW Group EVs), and SSP (current R8). That sounds like a good plan to keep the production costs in check while also giving it the latest tech, including the 800-volt architecture.

If it is indeed in the making, then the next-gen Audi R8 (name obviously unconfirmed) is probably a few good years away from hitting the road in prototype form, with lots of trippy vinyl stickers on its body. Moreover, VW Group's execs might make sure that it doesn't step on the toes of the partially-electrified successor to the Lamborghini Huracan, or that's what we think, anyway.

Now, back to the current R8, which is eight years old. The assembly commenced in Germany back in 2015, and over the years, it was constantly upgraded with additional special models and a mid-cycle refresh. And since the current generation will likely be the last naturally aspirated hurrah to the R8, we think this model deserves a proper send-off with a limited edition meant to make it way cooler.

There are several things the four-ring brand could do to it, and if an off-road-focused version came to your mind, you're not alone, as we also think this would be a great way to celebrate it. And it wouldn't be tricky to achieve, considering that its Italian cousin, the Lamborghini Huracan, has a jacked-up variant that adds the Sterrato suffix.

Audi could use the Allroad moniker on a potential off-road-focused R8, and it would obviously feature more ground clearance, some black cladding, a set of roof rails, and a few other bits and bobs to differentiate itself from the normal variants. In essence, it would look similar to the one recently rendered by spdesignsest and shared on social media.

Realistically speaking, the Audi R8 Allroad will never happen, not when it comes to the current iteration, anyway, so as much as some would want it to take a swing at its cousin and the Porsche 911 Dakar, the truth is that it will remain in the digital realm, and that's a pity, isn't it?
