SLS AMG Spreads Its (Gull)Wings Over Stuttgart

The recently-revealed Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, dubbed the new Gullwing, had glided over the city of Stuttgart yesterday, on its way to the Mercedes-Benz Museum’s roof terrace (that’s over 40 meters up), to be showcased in an open-air setting. This procedure will repeat every day until October 16, the manufacturer says.

The Museum’s roof terrace is not normally open to visitors, but such a vehicle asked for a special surrounding. The 465 square meter outdoor area can be accessed through Legend Room 1 on level 8. To place the SLS on the stage set for it, a 120-ton hydraulic crane let the car float down onto the roof terrace.

“This will be a very emotional experience for our visitors,” says Michael Bock, Managing Director of Mercedes-Benz Museum GmbH, in a statement for the press. “This super sports car stands for excitement, passion and high-tech. As museum for the past, present and future of the automobile we provide an ideal setting for the exclusive presentation of the new Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG.”

The Mercedes-Benz Museum can be quickly reached by the public . One can use either the No. 56 bus line or the “Neckarpark (Mercedes-Benz)” suburban railway station. Visitors using their private car to arrive there can use the multi-storey car park of the Mercedes-Benz Museum and the P4 car park.

The SLS AMG is equipped with a 6.2 litre V8 engine from AMG, mated with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, that delivers 571 hp and 650 Nm. This allows the new Gullwing to sprint from naught to sixty in 3.9 seconds, despite of its 1,620 kg overall weight. The top speed is electronically limited at 317 km/h and the fuel consumption level shows a combined 13.2 l/100 km figure.
