Senna Documentary Wins Critics Award at Sundance

Hours after making its debut in the United States at the Sundance Film Festival last week, the new documentary about triple Formula 1 champion Ayrton Senna received the prestigious World Cinema Audience Award for Documentary Film.

The movie received incredible reviews from the American critics over the weekend, so the award really comes as no surprise for film director Asif Kapadia. However, when receiving the award on the stage at the Sundance Festival, Kapadia couldn't hide his immense enthusiasm for the success of his film.

This is amazing, thank you so much,” said the film director, according to Autosport. “This festival has restored my faith in festivals. It has just been amazing – and this [award] tops it off.

This was actually not a worldwide debut of the film, as it was launched last year in Japan and Brazil. However, the European audience is yet to catch it in theaters, the first time that will happen being in June 2011. The film's European launch was scheduled to coincide with the British Grand Prix, as it will first hit theaters in the UK.

Its presence at Sundance however was seen as a major challenge towards stardom, as director Kapadia aims to make the documentary a success within the incredible big American market. And the award is a good start.

More than 15,000 hours of archive footage was used by the directors of this film – who benefited from the support of Bernie Ecclestone and his Formula One Management – and the final product was compressed in 104 minutes. Needless to say, we can't wait to have it in Europe.
