Schumacher Revealed First Mercedes Talk at Abu Dhabi

Michael Schumacher insisted that he did not negotiate his return to Formula One with Mercedes GP during the 2009 season. The 41-year old German told the media that the first time this move was seriously actually brought on to the discussion table was during the season finale at Abu Dhabi, when Ross Brawn asked him if he would consider coming back in the series.

The start was after the last race in Abu Dhabi. It was at the celebration dinner with a good cigar. I said to him 'Are you sure you want to ask this question seriously?' And then he said 'If you are motivated, I have absolutely no concerns',” Schumacher was quoted as saying to German newspaper Bild.

We were talking since about June, but mostly it was joking than anything else. Serious proposals were made after the end of the season,” the former Ferrari-an told Gazzetta dello Sport a few days ago.

Jenson Button announced his shocking move to McLaren approximately two weeks after the end of the 2009 season, only days after Ross Brawn announced his team's official partnership with the German manufacturer Mercedes-Benz. After Button signed his 3-year deal with the Woking organization, Ross Brawn signed Nico Rosberg.

The team's CEO Nick Fry then argued that the discussions with Rosberg began since the 2009 season and the German was already supposed to replace Rubens Barrichello at Brackley for the 2010 season, no matter what. So the lineup should have been Button – Rosberg. Then, we ask ourselves, why did Brawn ask Schumacher about his return during the Abu Dhabi GP, if he already had one lineup in his mind for the 2010 season?

But anyway, returning to our story, Schumacher revealed that this was not the first time Brawn made an attempt to sign him for an F1 comeback, only he failed to answer affirmatively because he didn't feel ready for it.

But I was not ready then. Before last season, he told me everything about (the withdrawal of) Honda, the installation of the Mercedes engine. I politely listened and then said 'Have fun with it!” added Schu, meaning Barrichello was more of a second-hand choice for Brawn last season, after Honda's withdrawal from the series.
