Art is what makes us all wonder whether or not the way we see the world is the right path to take. What if we’ve got it all upside-down, what if a chopper landing on the ceiling to become a fan in the living room is, in fact, the way the cookie crumbles?
The MD Helicopters MD 500 series - the same model this ceiling fan is - may be a family of light utility civilian and military helicopters, but we’re sure it has enough power to keep the air fresh. As a scaled down fan, that is.

The reproduction in 1:6 scale of the legendary Hughes/MD 500 is the brainchild of Raffaele Iannello, a Catalonia-born industrial designer currently based in Milan. According to him, this model was one of the few which could free itself in flight and perform one thousand acrobatic feats, including flying upside down.

In a fantasy world where things can be the opposite of what is real, Raffaele Iannello’s Upside Down instead of landing on the ground, lands on the ceiling and deploys its propellers becoming an exclusive fan with four blades,” the project is detailed. We’re not quite sure if the peculiar ceiling fan is available for purchase or if it’s rather an on-demand thing.

Whatever the case, you’ll want to know it comes in shiny black with a silver base and is produced in fiberglass with carbon fiber blades and an aluminum internal structure. It has a standard three-speed motor that can be activated by the included remote. The diameter of the blades is 140 cm (55 inches) while the base is sized at 70 cm (27 inches).

We’re here wondering, is this ceiling fan in any way similar to the actual chopper, other than its design? Well, the 500 series layout features shock-absorbing landing skid struts, a turboshaft engine mounted at a 45-degree angle toward the rear of the cabin pod, a fuel tank cell under the floor and the battery in the nose. In other words, we doubt that it is.
