SAE International Announces 2011 Formula SAE California

SAE International, a global association of more than 128,000 engineers and related technical experts in the aerospace, automotive and commercial vehicle industries, announced today the date and place for this year’s Formula SAE California event. The second one in the Formula SAE Series after the one in Michigan last month, the Californian round will take place at the Auto Club Speedway, on June 15-18.

The stars of tomorrow in automotive engineering will gather there forming about 80 university teams from around the globe, ready to take part in the four-day competition, while the registration fee is set at $2,000.

In Formula SAE, SAE International student members design, fabricate and compete with formula-style racing cars. The limitations on the car frame and engine challenge the students' knowledge, creativity and imaginations.

The concept behind Formula SAE is that a fictional manufacturing company has contracted a design team to develop a small Formula-style race car. The prototype race car is to be evaluated for its potential as a production item. The target marketing group for the race car is the non-professional weekend autocross racer. Each student team designs, builds and tests a prototype based on a series of rules whose purpose is both to ensure onsite event operations and promote clever problem solving.

“Formula SAE promotes careers and excellence in engineering as it encompasses all aspects of the automotive industry including research, design, manufacturing, testing, developing, marketing, management and finances. Formula SAE takes students out of the classroom and allows them to apply textbook theories to real work experiences,”
SAE International explains in a statement for the press.
