Would it surprise anyone if BMW launched a sort-of 6 Series Touring model when the new range is due to come out? We reckon not but we’re still pretty intrigued by the latest rumors coming out of Munich, quoted by French publication, Automobile Magazine.
Apparently, according to one of their sources, the Germans are planning to launch such a model with the new range, in what has become a habit of late in Germany. As they duly note in the article, the 6 Series range got a new body variation with every new generation.

Originally, back in the late 70s and 80s, the 6 Series was available only as a Coupe. With the model’s revival in 2004, it received a Cabriolet version and with the current range, a 4-door Coupe was added to the mix. What harm could possibly come from a Gran Tourer?

All ridiculousness aside, a 6 Series GT model would be rivaling the Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake that is already on sale and ruling its own niche all by itself. It’s a more luxurious and supposedly more comfortable alternative to the E-Class T-Model (Estate).

It will be the same story over at BMW, with the 6 Series Gran Tourer being an alternative to the 5 Series Touring. The problem here is that there’s already such a model available, in the shape of the 5 Series Gran Turismo that offers more space in the back and more comfort than its more ‘conventional’ brother.

As for the design, it would be inspired by the Gran Coupe but with a taller greenhouse towards the back and a tailgate that would be electrically operable and definitely more inclined than the boot on the GC.

This too will be sharing its underpinnings with the 5 Series and 6 Series models as well as the 3 Series, being manufactured on the 35up platform that is bound to show up in BMW’s plans in the near future. In doing so, the Germans will save some money and some weight on the future models.

As for the engines, expect 2-liter plants to make their debuts on the upcoming 6 Series but only in combination with electric engines for hybrid purposes. After all, the 6 Series has to be luxurious and powerful to set itself apart from the 5 Series that is already using 2-liter plants.
