RTA96-C, World's Most Powerful Diesel Engine Delivers 108,920hp

Have you ever dreamed of walking literally inside the engine block of your car ? Now you have the chance. When it comes to “big toys for big boys” it seems that there are no limits in creating bigger and “cooler” pieces of machinery. The “big toy” that we are referring to is nothing else than a humongous diesel that will easily top a 5- story building which generates 109,000hp.

Imagine having all that power at your discretion. The giant engine can put to shame every supercar we know about, not worth metionig the Bugatti Veyron or other vehicles that are pieces of engineering indeed, it's a pity that it will not be available for auto industry….regardless of it size. This engine was engineered by Finnish manufacturer Wärtsilä for the shipping giant Emma Mærsk which happens to be the largest cargo carrier in the world.

At over 1300 feet long, weighing 170,974tons and carries 11,000 shipping containers. Among the astonishing features are probably its 14 cylinders that weigh 51/2 tons each displacing 1,556,002cubic inches, putting out an amazing 108,920hp at 102 revs per minute, reching its maximum torque of 5,608,312 pound per feet. The engine alone weighs over 2,300 tons, also to note that the RTA96-C still needs an astonishing 1,660 gallons of heavy duty oil per hour, as related by gizmodo.com

For the moment there are only 25 engines in the service ,with another 86 on the production stand. It would be harsh to mention how polluting they are considering the important role they play in the world-commerce, that indirectly affects our daily basis lifestyle.
