Dogs are indeed a man’s best friend, helping us when we need as seeing eye dogs, guarding us as guard dogs, but what about driving?! Well, it appears that we'll be seeing that pretty soon as the RSPCA has partnered with Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles to teach rescue dogs to drive.
Yes, it seems that rescue dogs will save you, coming to your aid and actually driving the car. According to Anna White, manager at the Southridge RSPCA centre, they wanted to demonstrate how intelligent rescue animals can be and took three mixed-breed dogs, Tulip, Jacob and Harry and taught them how to drive. The vehicle used was a Volkswagen Amarok, and the animals actually managed to control the brakes, gears as well as the steering wheel.

Moreover, the intelligence factor was the only reason why they went on with this project as according to Anna, “there is a real shortage of volunteer drivers to take rescue animals to centres with space to accommodate them. We wanted to find a novel way that would encourage more volunteers to help drive rescue animals around the country.”

Well, that sounds pretty interesting and seeing the said animals sitting upright on their haunches, resting their front paws on the steering wheel and the gearstick while their rear paws rest on purpose-built extension levers, is definitely something worth seeing. Thus, if you by any chance see a Reflex Silver Amarok with the number plate FR5T APR, do check out the driver. You’ll be in for a surprise. Not!
