Rossi: Agostini's Record Still Out of Reach

Despite reaching his first major milestone in grand prix racing – winning his 100th race in the FIM Road Racing World Championship – Valentino Rossi insisted his future plans in motorcycle racing will not be influenced by the possibility of breaking Giacomo Agostini's record of 122 grand prix wins.

Rossi insisted a number of times this season that he will keep on riding motorcycles at the highest level as long as he feels comfortable with it and continues to have fun. Of course, breaking records comes as a bonus, but at the end of the day it doesn't matter that much, argued the 5-time MotoGP champion.

The Italian insisted that 22 more wins is not such an easy target as it may seem and revealed he'll decide next year whether going for that record is worth staying in the MotoGP from 2010 onwards.

I don't know if I will reach Giacomo's record, because it's 22 more (wins). But I have a contract for next year, so for sure in 2010 I will ride for Yamaha in MotoGP. And during next season, I think I will decide. If I had to decide now, I would continue, because I think it's possible to do another three or four years, but you never know,” said Rossi.

Agostini has 22 more (victories), that's a lot of races. For sure Agostini did two classes, but at the same time the races in one season were less than now. So I think it's more or less the same amount of races,” added the Yamaha rider.

As confirmed by the Italian earlier this month, Rossi's main focus this year is to retain his world crown in the MotoGP, and only after that think of records to break. He is currently leading the overall classification from teammate Jorge Lorenzo by 5 points, while Ducati's Casey Stoner is in 3rd place.

Next stop for the MotoGP caravan will be the race at Laguna Seca, this very weekend, with Rossi returning as race winner after his 2008 success.
