Romanian Priest Drives a Maserati, Wants to Sell It

God giveth, and these pesky superiors of his had to taketh away... Back in April last year, the nosy Romanian journalists drove their inexpensive company cars to the village of Varasti, somewhere near the country's capital. There, they heard, resides a man of God with very Earthly passions.

Luckily, the information the journalists had proved to be correct, a fact confirmed by a bright red Maserati Quattroporte (worth, depending of the version, some EUR200,000) which emerged from in between the houses and rolled down the dirt streets of the village.

Asked how he could afford such a vehicle, Robertino Oprea, the priest with quite a taste for cars, responded at the time that he and his wife (orthodox priests are allowed to get married) have some side business that allow then to live a lavish life.

That, as said, happened last year. Now, for unknown reasons, Oprea is selling the Maserati, as Romanian publication Cancan reports. Contacted by the reports of local television Kanal D, the priest valued the car at around EUR75,000 and stated that he will only sell it to the one that pays him in cash.

Last year, after the news broke, Oprea's superiors announced they would launch an investigation to see how the priest managed to pay for the car (albeit the man leading the investigation and Oprea's direct superior, Mihaita Podaru, pretty much said that, even if it could be considered inappropriate, a Maserati was, after all, just a means of transportation).

It's not clear whether this investigation led Oprea to the decision to sell the car, or he is facing, just like most us earthlings, some financial problems. Or, perhaps, he was ordered to follow the example of the other Varasti priest, Ion Gheorghe, who only drives a black... Audi.
