Revolutionary BMW M2 Coupe Coming, May Use Tri-turbo Engine

We’ve grown weary and tired of reporting on BMW 2-Series rumors. We just can’t be sure at the moment if the Bavarians are really going to name their compact coupes and cabrios any differently until had proof is found.

However, we’re not here to talk about the regular two-door, but an upcoming powerhouse from M Division. Auto Express had a little talk with BMW M Division’s new managing director, and he revealed that an M2 coupe is vital for the brand, as is a possible supercar that will take the fight to the mighty Lamborghini Aventador.

The M2 coupe will reportedly be based on the F21 platform that will spawn the 2-Series in early 2014, but unlike the 1-Series M Coupe it will have completely different fascias so no one will mistake it for the entry-level car.

The purist configuration of front-mounted engine and rear-wheel drive will be kept, but from then on it starts to get a little foggy. BMW will either use the existing 3.0-litre six-cylinder turbo, offering around 350bhp and a very similar look to that in the 1M Coupe, or a new and innovative tri-turbo, giving similar performance but better fuel economy.

BMW is all about drawback-free performance these days, mixing power and economy, and the M2 will reportedly make extensive use of carbon fiber reinforced plastic. Right now, it’s expected to arrive some time in 2015, taking the fight to the Cayman and TT-RS.

“In the 1M Coupe, we have a starter car for the M Division, and we are continuing to develop this project. Such models must be sporty, and offer extraordinarily low fuel consumption. This is something we could achieve with the M2. I think the 1M Coupe proves there is room for an M2, a coupe,” the M Division exec explains.
