In the past few months, Mercedes has unleashed a few new cars that literally turn the lights off over the rest of the auto industry. We have the new S-Class Coupe, which is not only gorgeous to look at, but also extremely fast and totally refined, or the 911-rivaling AMG GT super sportscar, a jewel in the Affalterbach crown. Sadly, that means very few people are tempted to check out aging models like the SLK-Class or the C-Coupe.
Launched only a couple of years ago, the current generation of the roadster is definitely showing its age, thanks to an outdated set of interior bits borrowed from the old C-Class and a face Mercedes buyers no longer want to see. And who in their right mind would consider paying 74,000 euros for a new SLK 55 AMG today just to enjoy a V8 roadster, when there are so many better looking and faster cars?

A serious mid-life facelift or brand new model is likely to come out in 2016, when the name of the SLK will be changed to SLC, according to the new corporate strategy they just unveiled.

Obviously, a major cosmetic makeover is on its way, but what if the SLK needs a rethink as well? What if Mercedes sells so many AMG GTs that everything else they make is forced to adopt the same style?

From day one, the SLK has been a roadster and that should never change. But all the other sportscars have been forced to adapt in order to survive and the SLK would be much more useful to Mercedes as a light, small coupe with a powerful V6 turbo engine.

Forget about perfect naturally aspirated throttle response, Mercedes. Nobody cares about that nowadays. Which is why dropping the new twin-turbo 3-liter into the SLK and calling it an AMG Sport, or something along those lines, makes a lot more sense then the current engine lineup.
