Renault to Sack Piquet on Monday

This probably won't come as a shock to you, but Brazilian driver Nelsinho Piquet is to be officially sacked from Renault F1 during the course of today. Well, at least that's what Brazilian newspaper O Estado de S.Paolo reported this morning, as it is believed the son of triple F1 champion Nelson Piquet will be replaced by GP2 racer Romain Grosjean starting the European Grand Prix.

It seems young Piquet's burst towards his team manager Flavio Briatore sealed the deal for the remainder of his 2009 contract. Not far from last week, following the Hungarian Grand Prix, the 23-year old Brazilian slammed the Italian out in public, saying that Flavio doesn't know s*** about Formula One and that he doesn't respect his drivers at all.

Piquet failed to score a single point for the Enstone based team this season. He was expected to perform well in Hungary as his R29 was fitted with the same features as his teammate Fernando Alonso's at the Hungaroring. However, he only managed a 12th place overall.

Although parting ways with Renault, Nelsinho continues to have a good chance to drive in Formula One for a 3rd consecutive year. While resting for the remaining rounds of 2009, he might race for his own father's team in 2010.

According to the Brazilian newspaper O Globo, Nelson Piquet Sr. is one of the candidates to take over the ownership of the Peter Sauber's team. As BMW announced its pullout from the sport last week, a number of investors have already confirmed their intention to buy the German manufacturer's stake in the outfit.

The report said Piquet is eyeing a partnership with Super Nova GP2 team chief David Sears for the potential “Piquet F1” team. Piquet aside, Fritz Kaiser and Joan Villadelprat are also linked with a potential saving of the Hinwil based operations.
