Renault Nissan Alliance Ends Condominium Charging Stations Testing

Being perhaps the most active two auto makers when it comes to the launch of electric vehicles, with Nissan having already deployed the Leaf in some parts of the world and with Renault planning an invasion of EV models this year, the French and Japanese companies are also engaged in a bitter battle to put the needed infrastructure in place in support of their plans.

Along with the countless zero emissions partnerships signed across the world, the Renault-Nissan alliance has also been testing, since August last year, EV charging infrastructure in condominium building. Together with Daikyo, the car makers were able to find out what they needed to make such systems work and announced the results today.

According to Nissan, 280 condominiums in Yokohama City were invited to take part in the program, with only one being in the end chosen to demonstrate the feasibility of the charging systems.

The test was meant to pinpoint problems and troubleshoot them, with Daiko being the supplier of the charging stations and Nissan the supplier of the Leafs to be plugged in them. According to Nissan, the results of the tests revealed consensus building for condominium association boards, the necessity of installation work and infrastructure utilization. The full results of the tests will be made public at a meeting of the Kanagawa Study Group for Development of Basic Charging Infrastructure.

“Electric vehicles will make a significant contribution towards moving towards this new society with a lower carbon footprint. Nissan and Daikyo understand that development of a charging infrastructure is a key component for widespread acceptance of electric vehicles by consumers,” Nissan said when the program was launched.
