Renault Accept FIA Verdict on Crash-Gate

Considering that they have been involved in arguably the worst race-fixing scandal in the history of the sport – basically the ultimate form of cheating in Formula One – Renault could easily say they came off wonderfully after the FIA verdict.

Following their meeting in Paris earlier today, the members of the World Motor Sport Council (WMSC) decided to give the French manufacturer a 2-year suspended ban from the sport. So basically, if Renault can keep a clean record throughout the upcoming couple of seasons, they will walk off this entire scandal sanction-less.

Renault have prepared for it a few days before the Paris meeting, when they issued a statement announcing Flavio Briatore's and Pat Symonds' departure from Enstone. In addition, they announced they will not dispute the FIA charges, probably knowing that the evidence were too striking against them.

Renault's F1 president Bernard Rey was present at the WMSC meeting today, and afterwards announced that the French manufacturer are accepting the FIA verdict.

We are very sad to find ourselves in front of the Word Motor Sport Council today. By way of background, as a result of our own enquiries, we informed the FIA last week that we would not defend the charges and we accepted our responsibilities in relation to the incident in Singapore and we immediately took appropriate action inside the team,” said the Renault president, according to selected media outside the Place de la Concorde headquarters.

Today, we fully accept the decision of the Council. We apologize unreservedly to the F1 community in relation to this unacceptable behaviour. We sincerely hope that we can soon put this matter behind us and focus constructively on the future. We will issue further information in the next few days,” added Rey.
