Red Bull Would Consider VW Engine Supply in F1

Red Bull owner Dietrich Mateschitz hinted once again that his Formula 1 team would fancy a future collaboration with German carmaker Volkswagen, should the company decide to become an engine supplier for an F1 team.

Talking to German newspaper Sport Bild, the Austrian billionaire said that the two companies already enjoy some fruitful collaborations in other motor racing series worldwide and that “talks with VW about a collaboration (in F1) would be interesting not only for ourselves but for every other non-factory team in F1.”

Our companies are relatively close together already,” said Mateschitz in a recent interview with the aforementioned publication. “There are partnerships (with Red Bull) not only in DTM but also the Dakar rally, and also in some other areas.

In recent months, ever since the International Automobile Federation (FIA) confirmed new engine rules for the 2013 campaign, VW has been hinting that it may consider an engine supply in the Great Circus. Audi and Porsche were the two brands rumored the most to make a switch to F1, although the former currently enjoys some wonderful and winning times in Le Mans prototype racing.

As far as Red Bull is concerned, the Austrian team is currently benefiting from Renault V8 engines, but the team officials have continuously claimed short on power as compared to rivals Mercedes-Benz and Ferrari. Another option for Red Bull would be to enter the engine-building business on their own, a solution which has also been hinted in recent months by the same Mateschitz.
