Red Bull Admits it Wants to Renew Webber's Contract

Red Bull revealed it would want to keep Mark Webber at the team for next season. The Australian’s contract expires at the end of this year and Red Bull would like to extend it.

The Australian’s younger team-mate, Sebastian Vettel, is already under contract for next year, so if Red Bull extends Webber’s contract it would have the same pair of drivers in 2011.

It is our desire to continue with Vettel and Webber”, said Helmut Marko, the motor sport adviser of team owner Dietrich Mateschitz, quoted by Austrian news agency APA.

Marko added that Red Bull was motivated to keep the Australian after his recent performances in Formula 1. "It is important that both drivers are at a high level of performance, with each one pushing the other to excellence. They must be going to the limit, for themselves but subsequently for the car," added the Austrian former grand prix driver.

Mateschitz’s adviser also said that the form shown by Webber could mean that his contract will be worth more. "Of course, the management uses it for salary negotiations. But we know what he is worth to us," Marko said.

At the same time, Mark Webber is regretted by his ex-team, Williams, with owner Frank Williams saying that letting Webber leave for Red Bull in 2006 was a “mistake”.

"You could say we made a mistake," Williams is quoted by Austrian newspaper Kleine Zeitung. "Our car was a disappointment, and we thought he was a part of that problem. Therefore, he was not our first choice," Frank Williams added.
