After a pretty close 2015, this year is certain to bring a change at the top of the best-selling premium car brands. For a moment there it looked as if Mercedes-Benz could snatch the first place from BMW in December, but it wasn't to be. However, the trend left no doubt that the switch was just a matter of when, not if.
Six months later and Daimler's most important brand offered us the official confirmation, surpassing BMW over the first half of the year. And in case there were any doubts left over whether Mercedes-Benz would be able to keep the position, they were all put to sleep by the figures registered in the seventh month.

Mercedes-Benz increased its unit sales in all three key regions - Europe, North America, and China - ending July with a total number of 163,770 delivered cars (not including any smart vehicles). With 1,170,389 units sold since the beginning of this year, Mercedes-Benz has set new records for both the month of July and the first seven months of the year.

The main drive behind this surge in the number of sold vehicles is the all-new E-Class model, released just after the start of the year. The sedan version is now available all around the world while the station wagon has been on sale in Europe for over a month. In the SUV department, the only truly new model - the GLC - was behind the dramatic rise of 43.6 percent of this segment compared to the same month of last year, the compact-sized SUV from Mercedes-Benz basically doubling its sales.

The combined number for both Mercedes-Benz and smart cars is as high as 174,337 units sold, accounting for a 9.6 percent increase compared to July 2015. The most important market for Mercedes-Benz continues to be Europe with 68,990 of the total 163,770 cars sold, followed by Asia-Pacific with 57,260, and North America with 33,185. Lookin at things on a lower scale, the best-selling country is China with 37,277 units followed by the USA with 28,523, and the brand's home market, Germany, with 24,543.
