There have been many occasions when carmakesrs planned on building convertible SUVs, but very few came through. Apart from the Jeep Wranglers, the Suzuki Jimnies and the only real convertible SUV, the Nissan Murano Crosscabriolet, the idea has remained just that: an idea.
This is surprising, as the crossover/SUV extended segment is currently the best-selling at a global level, so manufacturers could afford to start taking some risks. Risks such as mixing this very profitable body style with one that's constantly losing ground: the convertibles.

That wait will soon be over with the launch of the Range Rover Evoque Convertible now just a matter of weeks. In preparation of the event, Range Rover UK has placed a collection of full-size wireframe sculptures of the new car around some of the most iconic streets in London.

The locations include the world famous Harrods department store on Brompton Road, Knightsbridge, and also other easily recognisable addresses.

It's not the first time Land Rover has pulled this stunt, a series of similarly sized and styled sculptures depicting the original Range Rover Evoque having travelled around the world back in 2011 when it first debuted.

The idea must have proved popular since the British brand decided to use it once again (we could say "lack of imagination", but we try to behave). It must be said, though, that these sculptures are a little mind-bending, as they look like the kind of outline 3D programmes use before rendering the textures.

They seem to warp reality and screw with your brain, making those passing them by feel as if they've entered a kind of enhanced Tron world. At the same time, they don't give too much away on the looks of the new Evoque Cabriolet, even though I think we all know what to expect.

The launch of the real car is scheduled for November, so these six sculptures are just there to show us what the new Evoque will look like in its natural habitat: the urban environment. Speaking about this wiry preview, this is what Gerry McGovern, Land Rover Design Director and Chief Creative Officer had to say: "The Range Rover Evoque Convertible is perfectly suited to the urban surroundings of a city like London and it’s the perfect place to showcase the world’s first luxury compact SUV convertible. The locations chosen reflect the refined and luxurious lifestyle of an Evoque Convertible customer – two attributes this vehicle delivers in abundance."
