The i3 will soon start to populate streets across the US and charging the EV will start worrying a couple of people. However, according to a recent interview for Ward’s Auto, BMW’s Herbert Diess considers public charging a secondary solution.
From a logical point of view, he’s right, as the stations will start getting more and more crowded as the number of EVs increases but most people might actually have to go through such troubles as they don’t own a home with a dedicated charging station installed.

BMW is offering to install such a device in your garage but that still isn’t a solution as not everyone has a house in the suburbs and most people still live in apartment buildings.

Diess’ claim is still valid though, since you can charge your i3 at home, without a special station but from a normal socket. According to him in his one year experience with an i3, he never touched a public charging station because the car is being used inside the city for short trips, allowing the battery to cover long periods of time.
