Proton has announced a monthly sales target figure of 6,500 units for the newly launched Saga FL. The company is pinning its hopes on the small family sedan until a new model range arrives in the coming years.

The Saga's facelift comes almost three years after the car made its debut in January 2008. Since then, a total of over 200,000 units have been bought. Proton hopes that the Saga FL, that features a redesigned exterior and improved interior, will appeal to the younger-generation of car buyers, who would be attracted by the Saga FL’s positioning as one of the cheapest models in Malaysia.

The Saga FL comes as standard with a revised grille, new headlamps, a modified front bumper, restyled front fenders and a remodeled bonnet. The wheels are of a different design, while the side mirrors incorporate LED turn indicator. The rear end gets tail lights with LED lighting, a massaged bumper with reflectors and a muffler cutter.

Back in 2008 when it was first launched, the Saga quickly became the second best-seller in Malaysia, averaging sales of 6,200 units per month. Together with the Persona and Exora, its is one of three core models that Proton is relying on to increase car sales and profit margins. The company also pinning its hopes on the recently-launched Inspira, which has garnered 3,400 bookings so far, will strengthen sales further, while the second generation Persona is currently under development.

The Malaysian government’s has decision to remove all import and export duties on hybrid/electric cars/motorcycles until December 31 2011. The move is meant to establish the country as a a regional hub for environmentally-friendly green technology.
