The European Union’s proposal to introduce mandatory technical inspections for motorbikes, mopeds and scooters has outraged bikes all across the Old Continent. Bikes and two-wheeled means of transportation have never required such inspections, and bikers argue that the the adoption of such a law would not bring a benefit to safety. Some 5,000 bikers have gathered in Brussels to protest.
The Federation of European Motorcyclists’ Associations (FEMA) argues that “the measure would cost riders over 1.2 Billion Euros extra per year, with no benefits for anyone [. . .] as proven by several independent studies,” and then went on to say that “only 0.3 percent of motorcycle accidents in Belgium and 0.6 percent in Europe are due to technical problems [ . . . ] this is nothing less than a tax on poverty for those who cannot afford a new vehicle every three years. In terms of time and money, the cost for citizens is going to be astronomical, with no benefits in return. This is not acceptable.

We hope that the combined power of all Europe’s bikes successfully repels this frankly unnecessary law, which, as FEMA themselves say, only has one real use - to bring the EU in more money from people who can’t really afford much more than they are already paying. A video explaining more can be found here.
